People who are interviewing for more senior positions with your organization are most likely to counter your original offer with a counteroffer. For example, a senior applicant may have accumulated eligibility for four weeks of vacation in his or her current employment and does not wish to take a step backward to settle for the two weeks you offered. Senior employees are also more likely to negotiate issues such as severance packages in case the employment relationship is unsuccessful . If this was not covered in your initial job offer, you can count on it appearing in the prospects counteroffer. Less senior employees are more likely to accept your original offer without making a counteroffer. They realize that you may have less flexibility with beginning to mid-career positions. And, that is the reality of employment. Human Resources will not risk harming the morale of current, successful employees by negotiating more time off, a salary outside of the accepted market range for the position, or additional perks and benefits that are not provided for other employees. (You organization may have to make an occasional market-based salary adjustment for existing employees if the going rates for beginning employees change substantially in the marketplace. On any job offer, the employer sets a deadline to ensure that salary negotiations take place in a short period of time. The goal is to have the new employee start work expeditiously. Or, the employer realizes that the y will be unable to reach an agreement with the prospective employee and can contact other qualified candidates before they become unavailable in the job market. During the salary negotiation and while exchanging counter offers, an employer has the opportunity to continue to build a positive relationship with the prospective employee. The goal is to ensure that the new employee starts his or her new job in a forward-looking, positive frame of mind. Successful salary negotiations result in an employment contract that is acceptable to both the employer and the new employee. Counter Offer Flexibility Counter offer flexibility depends on the position for which you are hiring the prospective employee. Very similar to the salary negotiation as a whole, the employers flexibility in making a counteroffer depends on a number of factors. Flexibility in a counter offer generally increases with the level of the position within your organization. Executives and senior employees negotiate for a range of executive compensation requirements around salary, benefits, and perquisites or perks. They are more likely to continue the negotiation until they havenegotiated all of the changes to the standard benefits and perks that they can. A senior level salary negotiation is frustrating on occasion. Knowing this, its critical that a job landseekers rsum effectively catches the eye of the recruiter in very short order and that its compelling enough to inspire the recruiter or hiring manager to pick-up the phone to engage the candidate in an initial conversation.But what does a recruiter want to see in those first 10 seconds?As a former headhunter who worked with a national staffing firm in San Francisco, I can tell you what I wanted to see when I first reviewed a candidates rsum. In the initial review of a rsum, I wanted to be able to answer three questions about the job seekersWhat did the candidate want to do next in his/her career?What were the key skills that the candidate was selling me?How successful has this candidate been in his/her c areer? If I could answer these three questions about the job seekerand if the answers aligned with the position for which I was recruiting, I would print out the rsum and review it more carefully and ultimately conduct an initial phone screen. Does your rsum answer these questions?1. What do you want to do next in your career?Although objective statements have now become reisepass, your rsum should be written in such a way that your career objective is clear to the reader. Using the target job title as a heading for the rsum followed by a well-written Professional Summary which highlights your qualifications for the role, is a very good way of presenting your career objective to the potential employer.2. What skills are you selling me?Most job descriptions will define the essential job functions or primary responsibilities and duties entailed in the job for which you are applying. To be considered for the position, it is critical that your rsum shows how your knowledge, skills, and abilities align with the essential job functions.I like to see a summary of core competencies near the top of the rsum. This summary helps the recruiter very easily identify what you consider to be your best skills for meeting the job requirements.Its important, however, that the rest of the rsum provides the necessary supporting evidence to prove you actually have applied these skills in real-life situations.3. How successful have you been in your career?The best rsums are results-focused. At the end of the day, what sets you apart from the other candidates who are applying for the position is your record of accomplishments and your brilliant ideas, those ways in which you did the followingIncreased revenuesImproved efficiencySaved moneySolved pressing problems to save the day.When you can quantify an accomplishment by associating a number with the achievement, employers really take notice.I like to see rsums that include a section of Selected Career Highlights near the top of the first page. Too often, candidates bury their best achievements in the body of the rsum where they are easily missed. Check Yahoo and MSN also as each search engine produces different results. Check Pipl, which pulls from information all over the web. If you find things you dont like, take steps to correct that by either (a) removing content from sites, profiles, blogs or forums or (b) replacing search results you dont like with better stuff. You can do this by making smart and thoughtful comments on blogs using your real name, creating profiles and writing articles as mentioned above. This will bump down any negative stuff over time.12. Know who you are This goes back to my 1 point, but sometimes in a long job search, you can lose track of who you are and your unique value. In trying to get a job any job you can start trying to be all things to all people. Dont. It never works. Clarify who you are and your unique value proposition and then make sure that is the focus of everything else that you do (including articles and web profiles). Instead, research the company and then network your way to a real person. Send your resume to that person with a note telling them how excited you are about the vacancy you saw and why you would be the perfect fit. If you can find more than one person, send more than one email. Making the human connection is the key.There are many many ways to get creative about your search. Taking action on one or more of these suggestions will make a difference to your search results and also maybe help you to feel unstuck.
